A few hundred years later, over 150 weeping cherry trees are delighting thousands of tourists every spring with their exceptional seasonal beauty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Due to this seasonal beauty and the annual promotional efforts by JR East to lure as many Tokyoites as possible into the northwestern corner of its service area, Kakunodate gets quite crowded during the cherry blossom season. So, in an effort to beat the crowds and get some pictures of the samurai district without the hordes of fellow tourists, I timed my report for 5am, half an hour after sunrise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite the early start, I was in good company of two dozen or so elderly men with tripods, just as I had expected. The district remained calm throughout my stay. I left Kakunodate around 9am.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like in Hirosaki, the cherry trees in Kakunodate opened their blossoms several days later than average in this year, and were in full bloom during the past few days. In the meantime, petals have started to fall and green leaves to emerge, but the trees' sight was still worth the trip. I am afraid, however, that a large percentage of blossoms is unlikely to make it through the weekend and that green will fully replace pink in the near future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emerging green leaves indicate the near end of the blooming season&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kakunodate Riverside&lt;br /&gt;May 6, 2010 - petals starting to fall&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In more recent decades, Kakunodate added to its weeping cherries two kilometers of somei yoshino trees along the river, which flows through the town not far from the samurai district.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The somei yoshino follow a schedule that is typically 2-5 days behind that of the weeping cherry trees. Although petals have only just started to fall in small amounts so far, green leaves are already developing quite prominently. When I visited the city three days ago on April 7 some popular cherry blossom spots such as Arashiyama and the Philosopher's Path were starting to lose their petals.Today I saw many trees that were clearly beyond their peak as well as some that had no flowers at all. Though I was still able to see some trees that were very impressive, over the next few days the cherry blossom season in Kyoto will for the most part be coming to an end.Daigoji TempleApril 10, 2010 - beyond the peakIn the morning I headed to Daigoji Temple to begin the day's search for cherry blossoms. Daigoji is located in southern Kyoto and consists of quite a large temple complex. There are three paid areas that can be visited individually or all together with a combination ticket. The cherry trees at Daigoji have lost many of their flowers, and the paths that connect the temple's paid areas have much fewer flowers on their branches than they would have had at full bloom. When I visited the temple for last year's April 1, 2009 cherry blossom report I was very impressed with the temple's massive weeping cherry trees. Today, most of those trees that were so full of blossoms last year were well beyond the peak. There were a few exceptions at the temple of trees that were still at or around full bloom. The best trees I saw today were a couple of otemari cherry trees that usually are at full bloom in May but have opened earlier this year because of the warm weather. The otemari trees are located in the paid museum area that is to the right of the main entrance to the temple. Maruyama ParkApril 10, 2010 - petals starting to fallMy next stop was Maruyama Park, one of Kyoto's most popular cherry blossom spots. When Schauwecker visited a week ago on April 4 the famous weeping tree at the center of the park looked spectacular. As can be seen below, today very few flowers remain on the tree. There were quite a few people at the park today, but I am sure it was not nearly as busy as it was a week ago. Most of the other cherry trees in the park have not fared as badly as the famous weeping tree, but the petals are definitely falling from the trees. Considering it was a Saturday, both the flowers above and the people below were fewer than I expected. Heian ShrineApril 10, 2010 - full bloomA bit of a walk to the north took me to a site with much better prospects for good flower viewing. The garden area at the back of Heian Shrine has many weeping cherry trees that bloom a bit later than the somei yoshino variety of tree that are at Maruyama Park. I visited Heian Shrine three days ago on April 7 and at that time the trees were just approaching full bloom. Today the shrine's beni shidare weeping cherry trees were very attractive, and the garden paths were extremely crowd. At the most attractive spots the line of people would bottleneck as everyone stopped to get a shot with their camera or phone. Okazaki CanalApril 10, 2010 - petals starting to fallFrom the shrine I headed east along the Okazaki Canal to central Kyoto. Somei yoshino cherry trees line most of the canal on either side, and boat rides along the water are available to visitors. I found the trees along the canal in many spots to still have surprisingly many flowers. The walk or boat ride will still be enjoyable for the next couple of days for people looking for flowers. Kyoto Gyoen (Kyoto Imperial Park)April 10, 2010 - beyond the peakFor the day's final cherry blossom spot I decided to visit Kyoto Gyoen, the large park that surrounds the Kyoto Imperial Palace. At Kyoto Gyoen large gravel pathways make a grid with imperial residences, palaces, sport facilities and parks. There are some cherry trees along the paths, but today only a few of them retained many flowers. When I reached the area of the actual Imperial Palace I found massive crowds of people. Entry to the Imperial Palace usually requires applying before hand and visitors are taken on guided tours in small groups. However, the Imperial Palace currently has a special spring opening that lasts until tomorrow where people are allowed to walk through the palace grounds at on their own. There is of course a designated route and it is not allowed enter the palace and mess around with the emperor's things. However, the route that is now open passes directly by the Shishinden, the palace's main building, which must be seen from a distance during the regular guided tours. I enjoyed being able to get a close look at the building and the emperor's throne. From Schauwecker's report from Kyoto Gyoen exactly two weeks ago on March 27 I saw that there were attractive weeping cherry trees located in the northwestern corner of the park. Though many of the trees had been at full bloom 14 days ago, there are still many at full bloom right at the moment. Directly adjacent are trees that have branches that are covered with almost all leaves and almost all flowers. He is shown to have always had this personality, (which seems to come in part from his father, who displays some of the same mannerisms) however, it became much more pronounced in middle school, where he was bullied by his teammates on the baseball team after gaining a place on the team apparently through favouritism, as his grandfather owned the school. The other members of the team were resentful of this and felt that their reserve pitcher, Kanou, was far more talented than Mihashi. However, Mihashi refused to give up the mound and pitched in every one of their games, even when his teammates stopped trying and the catcher wouldn't give him signs to throw. Eventually, Mihashi decided to change schools for high school and succeeded in gaining a place in Nishiura. Although he felt guilty for ruining his junior high teams enjoyment of the game, and thus promised himself he wouldn't play baseball in high school, Mihashi let slip that he was a pitcher, and is thus dragged into the baseball club, who had no other pitcher.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although Mihashi is convinced that he has no talent, he has been practicing hard at pitching since elementary school, and his new teammates, in particular the talented catcher, Abe, are astounded at his highly accurate aim. When pitching, he divides his target into nine sections, which is said to be above the level of a professional pitcher, who would divide it into four. Mihashi also has four breaking balls, including unusual fastball which often confuses opposing batters. His pitches are said to be quite slow, although with training from Momoe his speed increases later on in the series.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mihashi's relationship with Abe as a battery is often strained, with Abe quick to lose his temper and Mihashi fearful of angering him, however, Mihashi greatly respects Abe and is eternally grateful to him for wanting to be his catcher, noting that if it weren't for Abe's skill at reading the opposing team and calling for the right pitches, Mihashi could never make anyone strike out. Abe, in turn, appreciates how hard Mihashi works on his control and his dedication to pitching for the entire game. With his help, and the encouragement of his new teammates, Mihashi's confidence in his pitching as grown slightly, though he still firmly believes it would be nothing without Abe, to the point that Abe promises not to get sick or injured for their three years of high school, in order to be able to catch all of Mihashi's pitches.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mihashi gets on well with the rest of his team mates, particularly Tajima, who always seems to understand him even when Mihashi can only stutter a few words. He was childhood friends with Hamada, who he calls 'Hama-chan', and they lived in the same apartment building until Mihashi moved away. He is also close to his cousin Ruri, having lived with her family during middle school, though he dislikes it when she calls him 'Renren', and is also friends with Ruri's neighbour, Kanou, who was his rival for the position of pitcher in middle school. Although he became more formal with Kanou in school, likely out of guilt for not giving up the mound to him, Kanou has always thought that Mihashi was a better pitcher than him. They are now on good terms again, and Mihashi calls Kanou by his childhood nickname, 'Shuu-chan'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite his low self-confidence, Mihashi is very stubborn, refusing to give up the mound even when so exhausted that he starts losing control of his pitches, and becoming upset at the idea of the team needing a reserve pitcher. He is quite guillable, loves to eat, and has a fear of dogs. Mihashi's grades are very poor, and he says he had to work hard in order to get into Nishiura. It is inevitable that you will meet people in your life with whom you have a deep connection, but then ultimately lose contact. Does that mean that they weren't a true friend, or did circumstances drive you apart?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But is real friendship based on contact? Or is it based on dependability; knowing that no matter how long it's been, you could call that person and they would help you out of a jam.&lt;br /&gt;Others may consider real friendship a relationship where they can have fun, be relaxed and never force conversation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whatever your definition of real friendship, it is clear that it can often be hard to find, and even harder to hold onto.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Convenience&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a big killer when trying to find real friendship. Friendships may seem real at the time, only for one or both parties to lose interest once the friendship is no longer convenient. As well as this, you may meet someone abroad, or at a party of a mutual friend and establish a bond; but if you live far apart then this won't necessarily endure, even if the connection was real at the time, because the right circumstances are not their to allow it to flourish.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a truly global world, people staying in one place long enough to form a true bond is harder than you may think. Things and people change rapidly and without warning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Growing Apart&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a huge issue when thinking about what people would term 'real friendship.' You may still regularly see the person who was your best friend at age five, but is it a real connection still, or are you just carrying on because that's the way you've always been? I'm not saying that it is impossible for friendships to endure, but it is also possible for them to become a habit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Love Factor&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is particularly, but not exclusively a problem for cross gender friendships. Films such as 'When Harry Met Sally' exemplify this problem nicely. You may think that you have struck up a deep and meaningful, real friendship with someone, only to find later on down the line that they had exactly one reason for interest in you. It is also possible to find that what was a real friendship to begin with blossoms only on one side, ultimately destroying the bond.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't Despair&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After all this doom and gloom I would like to add a lighter note; it is possible to find real friendship. Like finding love, you do have to leave yourself open and this does let in the good and the bad. However, the rewards are so great in finding real friendship that it is worth the trials. Make time for the new people that you meet; don't assume that they don't want to be friends - most people are open and nice, no matter what you might believe. His skills as a catcher were developed during middle school, when he played in the Seniors league. He was charged by Momoe to look after Mihashi, and he takes this very seriously, constantly monitoring Mihashi's practicing, what he is eating, and how much sleep he's getting, causing Izumi to note that he's very bossy. He's doesn't really like or dislike it. Eating natto is just one thing he does for his health like exercising, getting enough sleep, and eating fruits and vegetables. He sometimes has natto rolls with green onions when he goes out for sushi, and he eats natto at home, mixed with a variety of ingredients. He likes the light natto a little better than the dark natto. My friend -- we will call him Fred -- doesn't tell anyone Japanese that he eats natto unless he is asked directly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He is not ashamed of eating natto, but just doesn't want to participate in the natto dialogue. Natto, if you have never tasted it before, has a rather strong taste. He won't even attempt to describe it. If I push him, he asks me to describe vegemite. I search for words and can only say that it is really strong and salty, not exactly an eloquent description. Fred relents and says that natto is really strong and tastes a bit like beans. Fred is the first to say that his description is not very good. If you are really interested in what natto is like, buy some and try it. Remember that natto is kind of a topping or something you mix with food. The same as with Australian vegemite, you don't eat it straight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Due to natto's strong taste, many Japanese seem to love talking about natto. He thinks this is just one more example of the Japanese passion for Japan and all things Japanese. Before refrigeration, people in colder climates in Japan ate natto. Natto simple spoiled too quickly in the warmer climes to eat it there. Fred doesn't really care that much about natto or natto history. Fred says natto is an acquired taste like vegemite, beer or blue cheese. Fred says to refer to Wikipedia if you want to know more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back to the natto dialogue, many Japanese actually ask Westerners if they can eat natto. This is one of the stock questions in Japan, right up there with can you use chopsticks and what do you think about Japan. Answer negatively and you reinforce the questioner's originally held belief that Japan and Japanese are unique and basically only Japanese eat natto. Fred isn't sure if the question, when asked in English, uses the word can due to a mistake in English or due to a belief that eating natto is an ability. Either you can or you can't. Anyway, Fred doesn't like to affirm such beliefs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fred doesn't want to say he eats natto though for other reasons. If he replies affirmatively, that just leads to other questions or comments about him, other Westerners, and natto eating. Comments range from those saying that is incredible that he eats natto to comments that he is more Japanese than some Japanese. He is never certain as to how to respond to any of this. Fred doesn't want to be rude or insult anybody, but he doesn't really follow the logic. Eating natto really has no connection with nationality. Nor does it connect with national culture. Regional culture, yes, but national culture no. Fred simply doesn't want to hear what he privately considers more silliness. Built sometime in the 7th century before Tokyo was even Edo, to house the golden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, which, according to legend was fished out of the nearby Simudagawa, by two local fisherman brothers. Despite their efforts to return Kannon to the river where she was found, the statue kept finding its way back to them. Subsequently a temple was built to house the goddess. Sensoji is Tokyo's only agreed tourist attraction, and is visited daily by hundreds of tourists and worshippers from Japan and all over the world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Arriving from Asakusa subway station, Sensoji is entered through Kiminarimon ("Thunder Gate"). A majestic structure that houses two protective deities: Fuijin, the god of wind, on the right, and Raijin, the god of thunder, on the left. These ferocious gods oversee all who enter the temple and keep the grounds safe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once inside the gate, you will come to Nakamise-dori. This shopping street, set within the actual temple precinct, has it's own history. These stalls and their proprietors are a living part of a centuries old tradition of selling wares to the pilgrims visiting the temple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the late 17th century, neighbours of the Sensoji who received and served visitors to the temple, were rewarded by being given a special right to open shops to sell their wares along the approach to the temple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This continued until 1885, when the Tokyo metropolitan government, having taken control of the land belonging to Sensoji, ordered all Nakamise merchants to leave and in the same year built western style brick shops, leading to the beginning of modern Nakamese.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today you can find everything from tourist trinkets, such as folding fans, to traditional Japanese clothing including kimonos and yukata, to local snack foods. Stretching out for some 200 metres, Nakamise-dori is the perfect place to while away an hour and pick up a souvenir or two before entering the main ground of the temple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main ground itself buzzes with accents from all over the world and the click of cameras. Travellers and locals mix on the temple grounds, uniting in their mission to pay their respects. 100 yen will buy you an omikuji (fortune written on a small piece of paper). You place the money in an honour box and shake a small cylinder containing sticks with numbers written on them. Shake the cylinder until one of the sticks falls out and pull your fortune from a drawer with the corresponding number. If your fortune is bad, tie the paper onto a nearby string so that the wind can disperse the bad luck.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Centre place in the temple forecourt is an incense burner. Here you will usually see a group of visitors fanning smoke from the burning incense over themselves. The incense is believed to have healing powers, and so fanning the smoke over your ailment will help to heal it. If you suffer from headache, fan some of the smoke over your head.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main temple hall still houses the golden statue of Kannon, a diminutive 6cm tall, and is viewable by the public. Step forward to cast some coins in the offer box, which sits in front of the alter, take a step back, place your hands together, prey and then bow. This is the standard practise of preying at a Bhuddist temple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To the left of the forecourt and forming part of the temple, is the 5 story (53 metre) pagoda. A 1973 reconstruction of the original pagoda built on the same ground. This is the largest pagoda in Tokyo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Destroyed by earthquakes and World War Two aerial bombings, Sensoji Temple has been rebuilt and reconstructed time and time again. Testament to the significance it holds within the Bhuddist community and the general public.
